I am a new vette owner....spun a bearing after 2 weeks. I have read all of the LS1 swap thread and it sounds great but tooooo much money and beyond my capabilities. I live in Ca. and would like to put in a NEW engine. I have found crate motors for $1500 or so, but don't know if they will work with the 84 electronics. Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated. I need to keep this affordable....I'm hoping no more than 3K with me doing the work. Is this posible? I love this car...it looks great!
I'm sad I only had a couple weeks to drive it.
The GM crate motor should work just fine, and you get a pretty good warranty. Since it doesn't sound as if you know to many people in the engine business, I'd recommend the GM unit.
Thanks for the replies. This car was suppose to get us away from projects around the house...LOL...now it has become one. But it will be nice when it's done.
Above mentioned is what is best for ya. If you want to make it a little faster and more effecient do what Bogus said. The newer TBI truck/van/suburban ECM's from 87-91 are a cheap upgrade and will allow for custom tuning. BUT,if you want to go this route a harness adapter will be in order since the ECM isn't plug in and play itself.
Go check out the crossfire injection vault. many helpful hints and crossfire tricks are found there. Go there, create a profile like you did here and ask away. This forum is very informative but the L83 engine guys(crossfire) usually lurk over there. GOODLUCK either way you go.

He can't use that name. It belongs to bogus. Mis.information is his nickname.
For a budget replacement, the inexpensive, LM1, GM, crate motor is probably the best way to go. Don't sweat the computer. As slow and untunable as it is, there isn't a whole lot to be gained by tuning only, with no modifications to tune to. The computer can be changed at any time if you ever get there. Having the engine out is no advantage to changing the ECM. The intake manifold is a different story. You could at least post match it to the heads, while it is off. A basic, long block, crate, engine, new or used, will accept and work with your electronics.
