Default Tach/Dash Problems

Just drove my new purchase a 91 6 speed from Homestead to Fort Kent, Maine and it drove the 1950 miles beautifully.

Couple items I need help on diagnosing or a push in the right direction. Just bought this car so this is a fresh troubleshoot.

When I start the car, the tach jumps to the end of its range and returns to zero.

The speedometer/LCD is hard to read. Seems as though the backlight is too high or the contrast is out of adjustment. This I think may be a common issue with this generation???

And in the area on the LCD that outputs the range/mpg info, the letters sys appear and blink every 10 - 15 seconds or so.

As I said the car ran fine, excellant mpg (I was amazed to see over 26mpg)

Any help or direction would be greatly appreaciated.

Default My educated guesses

1) The tach sounds like it is bad or the tach filter has gone bad. This is how mine behaved when the tach went bad. A new dash cluster with a good tach should fix this one. But it could also be the tach filter off of the distributor.

2) The dash problem with hard to read output sounds like it could be that someone replaced the back light bulbs with the wrong thing. (this might be wishful thinking)

3) The SYS flashing on the dash means you have a problem and should be some codes you can pull from it. I have seen this with a dead battery or alternator going bad. Lots of reasons but the codes should point you inthe general direction.

All of the above should be taken with a grain of salt as I am a software developer and the most dangerous thing in the world is a software guy with a screwdriver....

This is a rookie question I am sure, but where do I go for a primer in pulling codes. Must be some sort of gizmo to connect up to a laptop?

On mine 94 you jump the #4 and #12 on the ALDL and it tells you where the speed normally is
A Haynes or similar would probably have this but invest in a service manual
