Default '86 ECM Help Needed

I need help accessing the ECM in order to troubleshoot a problem. I removed the hush panel on the passenger side and all I see are a great deal of wires tucked up under the dash. Being a somewhat larger than normal guy, I really can't place my body in the car in such a way to place my head where the passengers feet go in order to look up under the dash. Do I just keep pulling the wires down and eventually I'll see the ECM? Should I remove the seat to give me more room? Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated

remove the seat, lay on the pass floor with your feet in the luggage area, and you'll be looking at the ecm

That's what I was hoping I would not have to do. Thanks for the help.

If your a big guy, remove the seat and lay down. The ECM will be either exposed or you will have to move some of the wires out of the way. The ECM sits vertical and there will be two 10mm bolts that hold it in. Once these bolts are removed the plastic holder should fall down with them. The ECM may feel stuck and just wiggle and pull straight down. Have a flat head screwdriver handy with you and just loosen the metal clips on both connectors and pull out. I would inspect the connectors while your in there also.

I leave the seat in. Awkward, but doable.

NO big deal. The seat is held in by four nuts on studs. You can have the seat out between drinks of your favorite beverage.

I use 1/4 ratchet with a 14-16" extension, once you find the heads you dont need to lay down.

I've got an 86 too and have dropped my ECM several times to change PROMS, etc. In fact, I just did it again a couple of weeks ago when I had to install a new daughterboard after my MiniRam installation.

Each time, I simply kneeled on the garage floor, outside the car, and could remove all the screws called for to allow the ECM to slide down.
Re-installing was the same.
