Ok guys, 1988 l98 coupe, no mods. The problem is surging at idle, 500 rpm to 800 and back. No way of knowing if the check engine light is on as it's burned out(doesn't come on when starting). Once I replace that bulb, how can I display tr codes or is it possible without a scanner? I believe the milage has been suffering a few as well. Any help or direction would be appreciated.
Replace bulb - test codes.. Vacuum leak, IAC, and even the Throttle Position Sensor could give you these problems. Keep us posted on the progress. Someone in here has experience the same problem - Im sure of that

Replace bulb, check codes.
When I had my 88 it had hesitation and other drivability issues.
Changing the spark plugs, wires, coil, cleaning the TB and the IAC smoothed it right out.
There is not a code 35...code 36 has to do with the MAF, circuit, connection, and/or relays. If you have a factory service manual, just follow the troubleshooting tree and it should tell you the problem. Agent86 (forum member) has this on pdf and he might help if you don't have a manual. I would fix the code first before going any further.
The relays are located above and behind the battery. One is facing forward and the other is facing to the passenger side and are both mounted on a L shaped holder. Agent 86 saves the day again.
Thanks a bunch! We've had alot of rain and I've had to drive it in the rain quite a bit. It will be interesting to see if the relays/connectors got wet.
Check it out. I had this code when I started working on my some time back. I replaced the burnoff relay and the code went away. I have seen some guys post too replace both the power and burnoff relay when you replace one. All I needed was the burnoff to fix the problem. Let us know if you run into any problems.
ok guys, replaced both the power and burnoff relays and cleaned the IAC to no avail. Surging when warm, time to start hunting wiring issues to rule that out. Any more clues I would greatly appreciate it.
Did you reset the computer to clear the code? Unplug battery for a few mins before plugging it back in. If the code wasnt cleared, the ECM will still operate using default mapping.
Cleared ECM, no codes, but still poor gas mileage(9-11 city/14-16 hwy)and still surging from 500 to 7-800. Very sluggish performance. Could this indicate a bad MAF?
Unplug the MAF and see if it's better. I kinda suspect a bad 02 sensor for the mileage, I know mine was bad without throwing code 45.Have you checked for vacum leaks?
Unplugged MAF absolutely no change accept for the expected SES light.
Surging just as before unplugging. Not knowing much about what the ecm is looking for what would this be telling me?
