Default Extremely low Oil Pressure...?

Sometimes my oil pressure gauge only reads 17 psi at idle...other times it's 40. It varies...but the car has never knocked or shown any signs of such horrible pressure. Is the stock gauge just screwy or what?

what does it read at cruise?

if its a hot idle, it can drop to that level

It reads A LOT of different things at cruise speed...normally in the 40s...sometimes 55-60.

Isn't it pretty bad if that's where I'm idling?

BTW, I usually idle in the mid 20s...it's just odd how it changes so often and so drastically.

If you have a fram filter, swap it with a different brand and see if it changes.

cruise spec is 45-60psi, and about half of that at idle
the hotter it gets, the lower it will go, and the oil weight will play a factor
going to a higher weight raises it, but this is a stopgap maneuver

I dont think its a big problem.

Somone once said 10 psi for every 1000 rpm is good for a SBC.

Engine hot, minimum oil pressure @ 1000 RPM, 6 psi.; @ 2000 RPM, 18 psi.; @ 4000 RPM, 24 psi.

Obviously none of us would want our pressure readings this low, but these are the acceptable GM specs straight from the manual. So Zerski I'd say your numbers are actually in spec. (I guess, this is from a 94 manual I don't actually know what year your car is since you haven't filled out your profile).

UV - delete some posts!!!

Yea, those numbers are fine. As the oil heats up, the pressure will drop.

Zerski, what weight of oil do you use and how long has it
been (mi) since it was changed?

At what idle RPM and oil temperature do you see what PSI?
