Default What intake manifold?

I have to replace my manifold gasket. So, while I have everything apart I was thinking about upgrading. What would everyone suggest? This will be the only mod for a while, so I need something in the same rpm range. Its a 87

I would save the money and put it towards a mods-package that meets your long-term goals better. Just replace the manifold gaskets for now, and when you have a plan and time, do it all at once.

If you plan to go to a SR or work with the TPI later, then either the Accel or TPiS base would be good.

For a stock engine, I'd port the base and get in on the group purchase over at thirdgen.org on the ASM runners for $349,,, and get a Holley AFPR ($80). The GP link is below.

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/gr...e-runners.html

Even if you decide to do something totally different later,,, years from now if you don't ding them up,,, you could throw them on E-bay and get a serious percentage of that money back.

Keep everything stock until you do internal engine mods like engine work, cam, head mods, and also full exhaust.

I would not touch or mess with the stock TPI system.Get it fixed and enjoy the car as much as you can until you decide to do major mods.

The TPI is not known for its high HP applications, but makes plenty of torque for everyday driving and beyond legal speed limits.Even getting a larger intake manifold, runners and etc,you will not feel much or any difference than stock.Even fully porting the stock manifold, you would be lucky to see or feel a 5 HP gain or so.

The exhaust is where the gains lay right now. Then when you do engine mods, then the intake side comes into play for the L98 engines that need it for racing.

I have found that not to be true for my car, changing the intake base and adding AS&M runners made a big SOTP difference on my car. There is much more pull at higher speeds/RPM. She shifts much harder to! Since you are going to have the base off it makes very good sense to put a larger base on now, then later you can add a Super Ram, Mini Ram, or whatever. Not having to mess with the base will save you a lot of work and time later. It would be twice as much work to have to change it again! Any larger base will do, instead of porting your stock base, port and polish then new larger base.

Intake side and exhaust side are both choke points, doing both is best but doint either will help. Port the plenum, intake man. and get some as&m runners for now.

I dont doubt that it helped,it just didnt want to see him waste his time/money on anything he may not really need right now,and we dont know what his future mods are going to call for.

I bet it cant hurt to get a larger base for the TPI,but still going to have to take it back off later if engine mods get done.Or if he goes with a stealth ram or miniram, instead of large tubes or a SR,he wont need the TPI anymore.

So its really a factor of what future mods you will do,and what route you plan to take.Plan ahead, dont buy stuff youre going to sell for less that what you bought it for if you take another route. Many people have upgraded their TPIs only to sell the stuff off and get a different intake set up later.Mods get addicting eh?

I know I’m just one more opinion and haven’t posted much here, but I supplemented my income for many years working on hot-rods including a number of 350TPI cars (mostly back in the days when they were new and no one else would touch them). I’m not saying I’m the know all to end all,, I’m not,,, but what I’m telling you is based on years of first hand experience on multiple vehicles.

Porting the plenum and base and adding the ASM runners while you can get them $50 off regular price for $349 (only $15 more than SLPs) is going to be your best bang for the buck. However,,,, If you’ve made you mind up on the aftermarket base,,, Jegs has the best price that I’ve been able to find lately at $387 plus handling. Part number is 74197 - Here’s the link

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/store...tegoryId=15475

There’s a couple Accel bases on E-bay right now and they're always in the various Vette and F-body “for sale” forums. If you go used,, be sure to get pictures of ALL port exits (intake flange) to make sure someone hasn’t hacked at them,, or opened them larger than “stock” or you’ll have turbulence issues at the head when the intake exit is larger than the head opening – possibly negating any benefit you might see from going with an aftermarket base.
