I have to try a half dozen times to get my key out of the ignition in the last few days or so. I have to keep jamming the shiifter into reverse, until it finally allows key to turn to the lock position and lets me get the key out.
I have a factory service manual which explains how to adjust the interlock cable, but it doesn't say whether you have to get to the cable from underneath the car, or underneath the console...
I know that a good part of the shifter is exposed on the side of the tunnel if you lift the carpet. The floor and tunnel carpet are two separate pieces. If you remove the drivers seat, you should be able to work the console carpet up and get a look. I seem to remember that there is some sort of cable connected there, but I can't be sure. I will check and see if I have a pic from my soundproofing install.

Might want to take the top off first before you take out the seat and the side since the adjustment is on the opposite side, (passenger). If you can get the shifter boot off it looks like you may have enough room.
