Default scanners/softeware/equipment

Being new to the C4 generation .. I find myslef in need of "toys/tools" that I never have owned .. what is the min required to really be able to communicate to the ECM .. I already have the laptop .. but what about cables, software, etc ....... I simply want to be able to see everything that is going on with the engine

I'm new to the Scan & Tune neighborhood, but I have (or at least tried) to read the FAQ....it goes on and on mainly about OBD-1, sometimes drifting over to OBD-II, then back to the difference between and 82 & 84.

Sorry, but my oldest is a '96 and I'm only interested in OBD-II.

To say the least, the FAQ is simply too confusing and too long.

Any chance it could be broken down into OBD-I specific and OBD-II specific...?

I've started to price some of these items (ones that work with a laptop and standalones), and inexpensive they are not. Some are powertrain only, others may include body/chassis/ABS modules.

Again, I'm asking you (moderators) to look at the subject from the eyes of a newbie and perhaps provide some organized background information on the subject...perhaps more threads in the FAQ section rather than one long all-inclusive thread.

Thanks.

Have you checked Craig Moates site on the net? also there are free programs like TunerPro RT.

I'm running an old Toshiba laptop, Moates cables and TunerPro Rt, all in all I've got maybe $200. in it, and I only did this so I could watch all the sensors etc. in live time.

They both look interesting, and a very inexpensive way to get your feet wet.

However, both appear to only apply to OBD-I from the limited reading I've done on each site. Anything similar for the OBD-II..?

Send an email to Craig Moates and he'll set you up with what you need. He is a very helpful person and can answer any specific questions you have.
