Have to replace the harmonic balancer after the rebuild ! I am open to suggestions as to what type. We have a 89' L98 I looked at the TCI rattler it won't work and they suggested their competion. Any one has any suggestions. Also any short cuts to get the old one pulled off?
The world is your oyster on a harmonic balancer. Many to choose from but I have no advice for you on what to get. As far as pulling the old one off you'll need a balancer removal tool that can be rented from places such as Advance Auto and others.
It seems that the vulcanized joint is failing causing the TDC groove to move all around. At least mine is still connected talked to one of the Techs at FUNFEST and they had one come apart and had a 2 piece balancer. WRO87
The stocker has lasted 17 years. Do you need something more from the next damper? A replacement ought to be available through any auto parts store. Depending on the puller you use, a shorter forcing screw may save you from having to remove the steel lines from the rack.
I have messed with the L98 for like 10 years. The balancers are all crappy.
If you are not racing your car,the best thing is to go to Summit Racing and get a generic replacement.
If you race it, the summit racing hipo one is inexpensive, and high quality, but it's bigger in diameter than you may be able to go.
Also, if you order it, be sure to specify "no substitutions" because if they are out of what you want, the will substitute equal to or better, and you might end up with a piece that doesn't fit that you didn't order.
Thanks for all the input gang. Since the engine build I wanted a little better than stock, TCI Rattler would not fit they sent me to the competion ACI they didn't return any calls . I ended up getting a new balancer from CNC-Motorsports whom I have bought parts from before and prices are right. Went with their advice and bought a PowerForce unit that is SFI approved (should be better quality I hope??). Have set up the puller using shorter bolts and just waiting for the BROWN truck now. Will keep you posted as to the outcome. Thanks WRO
What diameter is the new damper? Have you some up with a shorter forcing screw? I really don't recall the three puller to damper bolts as being a problem.
I did use some shorter bolts with the center bolt being 5/8" 24tpi and double nutted it. Might not have needed the other 3 short but couldn't hurt. Had to make up something for the end used some steel plate that kinda shaped in a circle almost 1/2" did not want to get into the threads ( have had to tap those out already when my son took the original balancer off for the rebuild). I ordered a 6 3/4" dia. balancer same size as the original so I don't have any clearance problems. WRO
