Default Non OE roller cam in roller block?

If you want to run a non OE type roller camin a factory roller block;
ie one intended for a retro fit ( because good grinds often come up cheap on FS )
Is the cam button in place of the original cam retainer plate on the front all you need given that non OE types don't have the recess for the retainer?
And a non roller timing chain

First and foremost I don't see why you would ever want to go away from a roller cam. There are some limited cases where some flat tappets will open faster in a narrow rpm band but overall a roller is a much better cam. But to your question: a non roller cam/lifters are ground so there is a small pressure exerted on the cam to keep it seated at the rear of the block. The roller cam retainer would not be required. A cam button may be a good idea but I am not certain it is required.

I said roller not flat tappet.

The difference being as stated, the retro fit roller cams do not have provision for the retainer plate like the OE rollers do.
The reason for asking is that there are several big solid roller cams for sale around the forums at excellent prices but they are not OE roller type cams.

Yes, If you want to run an old style "big nose" SBC camshaft in an L98all you need to do is buy the old style Camshaft, Timing Chain and use an aftermarket cam button.

Also correct, You will no longer be able to use the "retainer plate" system that the factory "small nose" camshaft had.

Sorry, I misread your post. Reckless is correct.
