Default Worn distibutor question..

Guys I have 181K on my 88 vette. I would like to replace the distributor to see if I can get it to idle better. So the question is how much play can the rotor assembly have up and down? there is no lateral movement just up and down. Also since it idles rough Im really assuming its low or uneven compression. So Im replacing all outer parts now so when I get to rebuilding it I will have a total new L98.

up and down movement was designed into your disrtrib to carry oil into the lower bushing (the upper is lubed from the grease reservoir there, but loads are much less severe than the lower bushing sees)...do not remove the ''slop'' from the up/down unless you frequently have your distributor out and oil the lower bushing manually.

your rough idle is very likely due to worn valve seats AND guides....oem valve guides have two seals rather than one (which would suffice for oil control) to reduce cat contamination (feds say the factory MUST replace any emission component which fails before 50k.

Here are two nice topics on shimming:

I shimmed mine with this kit:

Five dollar, much cheaper then $$$$$$ for a new distrib.

Default How about even compression in cylinders

Thanks Guys.
One more ? then. Could my bad idle and light load driving issues be caused by uneven compression? It does have 181K miles. What are your thoughts? Let me add this; I had the throttle body rebuilt, replaced EGR valve and injectors. This fixed other problems I had but not this.

Bottom line, From what I have and what you might be saying is that I need to do a rebuild soon. If so what price range would I be looking at for a close to stock engine?
Thanks

When you tested the compression did you see a huge differnce in the numbers?
Post them for us to look at.
