Well, motors out, heads are off, and yes it was a blown head gasket. I gotta tell ya this job was much easier than I thought it would be. I roughly have about12-15 hours invested unhooking everything hooking up to the hoist and pulling it out. I dont think thats too bad doing it all by my myself. Found the leaking freezeplug and man those water passages looked like crap!! Full of buildup.
Mostly I was having overheating problems till the drivers side rear cylinder filled up with water. I figured it was a head gasket but I know the previous owner had run a few cans of stop leak through it in previous years. When I changed the water pump when I got it the passages were a little gummed up. So I figured that its not much more work to pull the whole motor than it was to just change a head gasket. Also when I'm done I think I can have peace of mind and trust that the car will make it across country if I want it to. Before this happened the tranny was acting funny occasionally, and I wanted to rebuild. I also have a full set of poly bushing I want to put in so I figured I got all winter to get this done.
About motor plans? I'm really up in the air about this one. I had thought about a 383 conversion, but I'm not studied up enough on the subject to understand what all really needs done or changed if I go this route. (How much machining?, Do I really need new heads? Do I have to do Headers?.) I am definately going with a super ram/cam. But like I said I am trying to study up on this to decide what I am going to do. Or the other option is to stay 350 with the superram..... My main goal is dependability with a few more ponies..
