after pulling spark plugs one more time, i think i have decided to cut off the smog tubes/pipes and plug/block off. they are nothing but in the way for my fat hands.i know a lot of people do this, any problems with it?
I removed all that crap without a single problem. I mig welded the holes with the manifolds still on.
I just might end up doing that since I have a buddy who has the tools to do so. I'm getting tired of it myself right now. Could use some hooker headers but I don't see that happening for another few years.
You own a corvette - treat it right. Instead of cutting those tubes, you might as well eliminate the entire pollution control set up and gain gobs of power. My advice is to spend a little bit of money and throw long tube headers on it. Eliminate the cats and it will look better, perform better, and it will cost little.
I did a complete rebuild and I can remember slicing my hands open on the heat sheilds, crushing my hand bones inbetween the stock manifolds, etc, as I took them off. The headers freed up a lot of room and install from the bottom in minutes. By far the easiest set of headers I have ever installed. And my car doesn't look like someone got in there with bolt cutters and hacked it apart.
I do all of my own work, so I would be embarassed if I was showing my car off and someone noticed that I hacked anything on the car. Plus...if you ever want to restore the exhaust system to original, you can.
Heres my view If your looking for any kind of performance improvement, forget it, get headers. If your not a fanatic and are soley doing it to ease spark plug installation and clean up the engine bay, weld it on the spot. If your really worried about looks, spend a few painfull hours of re and re and make it look right. I did it soley for spark plug ease and part of cleaning up the engine bay. Here is an pic from when i tore it down for the rebuild.
