I have a 95 with the PKE system. Out of the blue, power to the starter is disabled and I am not able to disarm the system, following the instructions in the Owners Manual. The remote will not function at all and the battery is good. There is a constant clicking noise (relay?) coming from behind the passenger side I/P. Power windows, lights, etc. all function. Any suggestions?
Lets sort this out PKE and VATS. The VATS will disable the starter. The PKE will lock and un- lock the car. If the PKE is acting up you can disable it by removing the fuse for it. There is a PKE fuse and the radio fuse also feeds the PKE receiver. (Doing this from memory for now). Once this is done the PKE is disabled. The car will run with out any receiver in there at all also. If the car does not start its has other problems. Either VATS or perhaps a bad starter.
Need some more detailed information if you have it.
Thanks! I'm beginning to suspect the battery. Although is's less than two years old, when I connect a charger it indicates fully charged. Yet at one point the headlamps would come on and later they wouldn't. Maybe there's a bad cell or short so not enough amps to operate the starter. I still wonder why the courtesy lights won't come on or the door locks/rear hatch operate with the remote. Also what is the clicking sound coming from behind the I/P on the passenger side. I will try jumping from a good battery tomorrow.
This is why I say to pull the RDO fuse (#40) because it will remove power to the PKE. There are 3 relays in the PKE and if they are clicking this will stop it. The receiver is mounted behind the DIP light panel in the center. If the clicking persists, then need to look else where.
Take off the battery cables and check there first. Too many times a new batter gets its life cut short because during installation someone over tightened the bolt causing the battery to leak onto the battery bolt, or it increases the internal resistance because the lead gets stretch out and prematurely ate up by acid.
