Default Headliner Replacement

I am new to the forum, so I hope I am posting in the right place. If not please let me know where and how to do it.

I am about to replace the headliner in my 1985 Coupe. No glass roof. I ordered material from MidAmerica. It arrived without instructions. My general questions are regarding removal of the roof trim. Does it have to be removed? If so I can't figure out how to do it. Any helpful hits, instructions, shortcuts etc. regardingt the headliner replacement would be appreciated. Thank you.

I will take a shot. Take off your roof so you can work on it. Do not dis-assemble the roof. I had a post beginning of the year on this and have spoke to many (have not done mine yet) and the pros remove the foam and glue it back in. Some people do not remove the foam and tuck it in on the sides.

You got to be real careful removing the foam so you don’t break it. It had been a real mixed bag of opinions and not clear direction. I think the best way is take out the foam as an upholstery shop told me. Mine is a 94 with the take off roof.

When I did my 86 I removed the complete headliner which was glued along the edge to the hardtop. The fabric/foam was glued to a hardboard substance, kind of like industrial cardboad and after removal it too fell apart, what I then did was stop off a place that does interiors and he sold me a door panel board, thin but somewhat rigid, I traced the original pattern then cut the new panel and did some test fits, I then glued the board and new fabric/foam with Spray 90 (Home Depot) I started in the center with the headliner material and pushed out towards the edge to ensure no bubbles (once the two surfaces touch you can not pull them apart). I folded the fabric over the edges and glued in place. I then used 2" self adhesive velcro to attach the completed headliner in place. I hope this helps, if any questions let me know.

I see you live if Branchburg. Our Corvette Club meets in Somerville. Do you have any expertise in the following area? Running a Fund Raiser in Somerville in August. Taking club photographs. Leading cruises from Stewarts in Lebanon. Being a general Jack Of All Trades regarding club business. Running the club Christmas Party. If so please contact our club as we are looking to replace the person that handles these tasks now.

...there are a few ways to do this but, i retro-fitted a solid roof targa headliner to a smoked clear top and i have done everything i know to get velcro to stiock to the top to support the headliner but, the heat of the top would make the velcro glue gummy and it would not hold...i was working with a home office rep of velcro on this.......i removed it from one top, "rebuilt" and fixed the "foam" backerboard, applied new fabric and used 3-m spray glue, and fastened it to teh clear smoked top using aluminum clips i manufactured....

hard to find. If the members agrivate him he might leave before he's replaced. That would not be a good situation for your club.
