Ok, everyone has questions about exhaust systems, and I'm no different. I'm doing my exhaust in custom bent 3 inch with an X-pipe. Now, I've heard that larger tubing makes the exhaust quieter, and I've also heard that an X-pipe makes exhaust quieter. Anyone have any comments on either of these 2 claims? Also, I love the sound of Flowmaster 40s, but I've heard they have a really bad resonance around 1800-2200 which is exactly where my car cruises at on the highway. Since it's a DD I don't want really bad resonance. Are 3 inch 40's quieter than 2.5s? Does the X-pipe make them quieter or atleast resonate less?
I have long tube headers 2 3/4 pipe with an x behind the trans and exiting to 2 chamber flows and lt1 tips. It's so loud that at 1800 to 2000 when you talk its like talking into a fan. my kids think its cool but my neighbors hate me. but I have 300 horse to the rear wheels.
See, that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. Do the 50 series flowmasters have enough of a "flowmaster tone" when you really step on it. Do straight pipes with no mufflers resonate less?
I wouldnt say a 3" is quieter than a 2.5", its just a different tone and a slightly different resonance RPM range. 3" tend to have more bass sound.
The X doesnt necessarily make it quieter, but it does reduce resonant waves that cause the drone. These things can depend in general on where you put it but youre pretty limited in where you can do it with C4s, so thats basically a moot point.
