Default Leaky Fuel Injectors

I am pretty sure I have the L98 Leaky Fuel Injector problem (discussed several months ago on here)... anyway, I've never done anything about it yet. Now I want to get to it and get my car back to 100% running again.

so... how can I tell which one(s) are leaking visually? or is this something I have to do with a pressure gauge or what? I have no doubt theres fuel leaking in to the engine, so I don't need to do the whole fuel pressure test thing.... I was just curious how to tell which one(s) they are.

I'd like to just replace them all, but those things are expensive!!

If anyone has any suggestions, or perhaps a good used set somewhat cheap, please let me know. I am getting my new PCM this weekend which will take care of starting problem #1 with eliminating VATS (that and I have to remove all the VATS computers/chips) and the 2nd problem I had with it leaving me stranded everywhere was the leaky fuel injectors.

Thanks!

If you rather not use a fuel pressure guage, you can run the engine and turn it off and pull the spark plugs. If they are wet with gas that is the cylinder the injector is leaking in. You might also want to ohm them hot and cold (16 ohm each). I would recommend either servicing all of them or replacing all of them with new. A fuel pressure guage shows how fast the leak is and different approaches can tell you were the leak is actually coming from, but the plugs tell alot.

probably for around $100, you can get your originals cleaned and flow tested...

I agree with RRTvette

Since you have an L98- this is possible.

Prime your fuel system once or twice, then take out the associated spark plugs. They will be a little damp or show traces of such.

Make sure the plugs are only finger tight so you can get them out quickly after priming.

I'm not a fan of the spark plug method, but if any plugs are fuel soaked, I wouldn't run it until it's fixed. Better to pull the rail with the injectors attached and then with a paper towel underneath the injectors, energize the pump. Leave it for awhile and watch for any beads of fuel on the tips of the injectors or fuel on the paper towel.

with SunCr...checking the plugs is just a hit and miss proposition at best.Ohming them will only tell the health of the injector coils, not necessarily whether they're leaking or not. To absolutely identify which specific injector is leaking (unless your constantly fuel fouling a specific plug) it's best to pull the rail with the injectors and check them.

Thanks a lot for all the help guys, I will give this stuff a try this weekend.

This weekend starts car show month for me. Luckily the one this weekend is 5 mins from my house, so if it gets stuck, I can just let it sit over night and get it the next morning. The next several shows are all out of town, so I was trying to get these issues resolved before then.

Thanks again for the advice. Ill give some of this stuff a try!

BTW: If I wanted to get a new set anyway since that seems to be the best advice to replacing them, I was having a hard time finding what type of injectors to get. There are several different LB ranges (19,20,22,24, etc). how do I tell what I need?

Which brand is the best? I see a lot of people go with the "ford pink tops"

Are these the same ones found here?
http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/Injec...sTPI.asp#caddy

Also, depending what pressure/lbs my stock injectors are, can I get larger ones like 24lb injectors that everyone seems to be getting, and then I assume I will need an adjustable FPR?

On that note, I just had a new PCM burned for all my current mods. that said, should I just replace them with the stock lbs to match the tune or would I need a new tune/pcm burned if I went with larger injectors?

Yes, I did some searching but none of the topics matched my personal questions about this.....

thanks again

if you have a stethoscope, you can usually hear the leaky one hissing when you pressurize the rail.

I had a presure gauge on ours and saw the pressure drop almosr as quick as we shut the pump off. Because we had just the headers on found raw fuel dripping out of the drivers side. Had my son pull the plus on that side and #1 was real wet!! Tried the pump with the plugs out and could hear it hissing/leaking out of the plug hole. wro87

I agree, if you pull the fuel rail and prime the system this is the best way to tell if the injectors are leaking (visually checking). Checking the plugs and using a fuel pressure guage will help and prevent you from pulling the fuel rail. IMO if *I* were to go through the trouble of pulling the fuel rail, there would be a new set of injectors right beside me.

at that point, I would not be putting the same injectors back in... Either new or (my preference) rebuilt.

You can use the Ford 24# injectors, alot of guys do, but you'll need an AFPR and you probably should have a new chip to change the value..some guys do and some don't, are you still running the air pump?

no, the air/smog stuff is gone completely.

I really want to get the larger injectors, but if that means burning a new chip and I JUST got a double set burned last weekend for my current setup
