'87 Coupe Speedometer / Odometer / Code 24 Solution
Now it is time to offer advice to others who may have a similar problem. I finally have a resolution to this nagging problem. I have often read that other people are having problems with speedometers / odometers / Code 24, but I have not seen solutions to these except for the obvious - bad VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) or guage cluster. I bought the car with a check engine light, and code 24, 33, and 44. It was a bad ECM that caused the code 44, two bad relays for the Air Flow Sensor that caused the code 33, and a pinched and grounded wire for the lack of speedometer /odometer / Code 24. The yellow wire that goes from the VSS to connector 237 under the right side dash, near the ECM was grounded out near the back of the engine/firewall. The wire wasn't broken, just worn bare where it would ground out on the engine. Unfortunately I had to pay a good Corvette shop to solve this problem (JD Corvette in Bellflower, CA), but it was money well spent. Much better than buying another VSS (yes I did spend $110 needlessly on a VSS), or $390 on a rebuilt gauge cluster. I learned a good lesson. When troubleshooting an electrical problem, don't just check for continuity with the wire, check to make sure it isn't grounding out, therefore preventing the signal to get to the proper location.
Now that I don't have any more check engine light issues, I can finally take it in for the smog test this weekend so that I can complete the transfer of title.
Regards, Ed
