there are a couple of mile long threads involving just this topic... if you don't feel like searching, then go to the C4 Tech FAQ (sticky) and look for the links in "Online References".
As stated above, the introduction of the LS1 came in 1997 along with the C5's. It was put into the Camaro's in 1998. The best years were later ones, with the introduction of the better intake manifolds, and higher lift camshafts in 2001 for the Camaro's.
I have a 2001 Z28, with the LS1 motor, and actually just found out that they ran out of the LS1 blocks, and some cars had LS6 blocks in them. Apparently I was one of the lucky ones, because my Z28 has a LS6 block, but still only the LS1 heads.
With just a SLP catback exhaust, SLP lid, and a tune using LS1 edit, this car put down 348 RWHP which to me is astounding with the 6-speed, and a 3:42 rear axle. I can only imagine what a cam, head work, and some headers would do

there is a difference between LS1 blocks (Z06 v. base)? I was always under the impression that the blocks were identical, and the heads/intake was where the major differences occured.

According to the Black Book, only one block for the entire run of the C5, 12561168-block. LS1 head-12564241,LS6 head-12564243.
There is a difference between the LS1 and LS6 blocks. The LS6 blocks have a different windage system inside, and there some structural differences that add strength.
Normally I wouldn't question the black book, but it's wrong in this case.
My Mom has a 2001 WS6 with a Vortech. About a year ago she broke a piston and we used built an 04 LS6 block for her. You could see the differences in the blocks with the both oil pans off.
There is also a difference between the LS6 blocks. A 2004 LS6 is different than a 2002 LS6 block.
Like I said, I normally wouldn't question the black book, but I have some first hand knowledge on this one. The black book is wrong on this one.
Hop into the C5 ZO6 section, I am sure they have covered this there.
