Default Scanner Recommendation

Since I'm now driving a 96 LT1, I just learned I'll need a scanner to pull any SES codes that are sure to pop up over time.

I'd like recommendations as to which one to buy.

Thanks,

Jake

Jake,
Why not just get a OBD11 code reader, rather than a scanner?
I have a 1996 and get a SES light every now and then but use a OBD11
code reader.

Purchased off of Ebay for $20.00 - $25.00---- reads erases and comes with a book of codes and where to start looking for the problem.

Let us know what you decide.

Hi Jake,
Congrats on the newer Vette purchases and hope it works out great for ya.
Anyways,as far as scanning goes,Im interested in this scanning system by auto tap.Using a lap top you can do it all,and get real time stuff. They have some sample videos on there you can watch and get the idea how it works.Isnt that cheap but man I love the idea of being able to see misfire graphs, charts and all kinds of things to troubleshoot problems at home.Kinda like having an engine analyzer in one.

Im seriously thinking of getting the OBDii system from them, with the 99 dollar enhanced upgrade, which allows even more data to be used.

heres the site...

Dont forget great deals on ebay for USED snap on MT2500 scanners with OBD 2 cartidges or GM Tech 2's.They do alot for the money as well.Heck sometimes a cheap code reader is all you need though.

Well, I went to both O'Reilly's and AutoZone this afternoon and looked at their OBDII offerings.

No one in either of the stores knew where the scanners plugged in. O'Reilly's doesn't do free scans but AutoZone does, but two of the AutoZone guys went out to my car and didn't know where to plug in the store's scanner.

They kept looking in the area where your right knee would be when sitting in the driver's seat, but nothing was there. I know that's where the ALDL is located on my 86, but on the 96 there's nothing there.

So before I plop down the $$, I'd at least like to know where to plug the scanner in.

Can anyone help? Where is the connector located??

Thanks,

Jake

I've been doing it by feel---- on my 1996, its in front of my right knee.
It measures about 2" X 3/4" rectangle which is smaller on one side.

While sitting in the seat, reach up under the dash, in front of your right knee. Try it again.

On my 93 (I know it's ODB1) the connector is secured with 2 screws. The cable is 6 to 8 inches long after it is un-screwed from the mounting position under the dash. If someone left it hanging it could be stuffed up under the dash somewhere?

Okay, thanks for that info. I'm about to go out and spend whatever time it takes to track the connector down.
