Howdy Everyone..The Problem is that my dig dash on my 86 is bright all the time but that's it...No Gauges..No temp, tach, oil, nothing I can use the info center to switch things but other than the basic dash nothing works WAZ Up ???? Masive Ground Problem ??? Dash Took a Poop ??? What do you think
Check the LCD and CLSTR fuse with an ohmeter. I take it that the 4 lamps that backlight the LCD's (liquid crystal display) are lit but no bars or digital numbers are showing. If you have a bad ground, you likely will have the turn signal and high beam lamps always on. If not, it would be worthwhile to get to the back of the cluster and unplug the harness connectors and using a Q tip and electrical contact spray, wipe the contacts and plug the connectors back in and turn on the ignition. Still bad, then ship your cluster off to a repair station. Go to www.batee.com for help in removing the cluster.
If I understand what you're describing correctly, your problem is with a 40 pin chip on the processer circuit board. It's U3 and is called a VIA (Versatile Interface Adapter). Do the Fuel Guage bars work? If they do, it's probably the VIA. I've only seen this once though. The VIA is available. I bought two when I discovered one bad in a cluster I was repairing so I have a spare. They were less than $1.00 each. Unless you are well versed in circuit board repair, I'd do as jfb suggests and pack it off to one of the repair facilities. I'm just too far away for you to send it to me.
Let me be more clear (Sorry)...I have no bands at all.. no bars,no fuel gauge, nothing but backlight that stays the same brightness if I block the sensor or turn the dimmer on the headlites...Hopes this is more clear I really didnt know how to explain it correctly
