I have been driving all weekend on the highways and about halfway through my trips the "service engine soon" light has come on. This is during normal operation, highway speed, oil-205-210 and coolant -195F. My trips are about 90mi long and it only comes on on these long trips, not when i just go to the store or something. what could this be?
do you have a code tester. i know in my 86 my light comes on long trips it normally is a code 32 which deals with the egr. what you need do is get a code scanner and when the light comes on pull over and check it right then and see what comes up.
I saw a post last week that mentioned this problem. In a nutshell, check the gas cap. A member had check the "codes" and had found nothing and another forum member advised to make sure the gas cap was tight. I have had a similar situation. I can go for weeks w/o seeing the SES and then about 20 minutes into the morning commute it will pop on. However, when I come out in the evening the light is not on when I start up. I have had the codes checked and everything else seems fine. Try the archives and see if you can find the post. :flag
My 86 throws the code 32 on an occasional long trip with like said above is EGR related. You can use a paper clip to jump the a and b terminals on the diagnostic connect under the dash. Do this with the key in run posistion, but the car not started. Watch the SES light, it will flash a code 12- 3 times, then will start with any stored codes in your computer. Codes are read by long flashes followed by shorter ones.
