Default Painting engine stuff....?'s

I want to paint my intake, runners, valve covers, and alternator bracket, so I need to buy all of the necessary gaskets and stuff like that. I already have the paint. Do I also need to clearcoat.
What do I need to buy?
I already have a volt/ohm meter for the TPS. I probably have enough tools.
Any Tricks?

Here is the dist. cover

only clearcoat if you want ''shiny'' look...
old used car dealer trick is to spray everything under the hood with clear--everything, no masking or taking things like air cleaners, hoses or belts off....

That explains what all the flaking stuff is all over everything under my hood. Hoses, wires, vacuum lines, etc.

I'd do clearcoat as well just for that same reason. Its WAY easier to wash and you have less worry about scraping a layer of paint off while washing it.

Will clearcoat stand up to engine compartment temps? Or did 87Rag already answer that.

Bubba

I need to paint my valve covers, cus my friend, who worked on my 90 L98, at his shop, decided the engine looked a little "dull", actually it just needed a rise-off. Whatever he used (he doesn't know the name, and there's no label on the 10 gallon drum, but "I've used it for years, and never had this happen") did a great job, except, for the valve covers. They turned a lovely shade of copper. Actually, they look kinda nice, but I want them back to stock. The color in your pics look very close to stock. Where did you get it? Is it heat resistant?

I'm thinking of this from Eckler's

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...&dept%5Fid=122

I'm not sure if it's glossy. Anyone know how it matches the stock color and is it glossy? Or can someone point to product that matches stock color.

My friend mentioned "glass beading " them...that scares me. Anyone done that?

PS: I would clear your stuff for the reasons already mentioned.

If you get clearcoat engine paint it will. Stay away from it on lighter colors though, it will yellow with age. I use it over the red on my engine block though, no problem there. I used it over cast aluminum paint before though and it yellowed badly in a short time.

I painted the major parts of my engine in 2003. Here is what I did:

1. Removed plenum, runners, valve covers, etc.
2. These parts were glass bead blasted to give a smooth even finish and to remove the oxidation and other crap.
3. Coated parts with a metal prep material called PPG DX501. This coating gives improved paint adhesion to the aluminum and magnesium parts.
4. Buy some Rusteolum Hi Temp Silver paint at Home Depot or Lowe's and spray paint the parts. This is the same paint you would use to paint a BBQ grill.
5. I put a second coat on just to improve the finish.
Here is a picture taken in 2003 after the painting:

Here is another picture taken about a month ago at a car show:

Note that the master cylinder is painted in the second picture and not the first. The exhause heat shield on the drivers side in also painted with Rustoluem Hi Temp Sliver paint.

I did not use clear coat on the parts. Let me know if you have questions on this

I did powdercoat, then they clearcoated it. This stuff is durable, and looks great. You also have a world of colors to pick from.

I mentioned this in another thread but it never hurts to cover the bases. I use mothers wheel polish on the AC compressor, the accumulator, the metal parts of the refrigerant lines and even my upper control arms. They come out like chrome when you follow the directions.
