Does oil cooler really do anything?

it does do something, but not much....based on past work experience with heat exchangers, i can't see that there can be enough ''surface area'' in such a small area as to do much ''exchanging''...maybe enough to reduce warranty cam replacements of flat tappet cams that came with elevated water temps, to meet emission requirements, which lowered oil lubricity....i ran my 86 without the cooler to allow use of the full size oil filter during new engine break-in, effects on oil temp were inconclusive (i did use a clamp-on finned heatsink on the full-sized filter, lost that on the road eventually)
