on their own, intakes are a waste... the engine will only take in so much air. you need to increase the air requirement before the performance increases.
It's that simple.
And that complex.
With that said, if you have a hotter motor, this might help a bit. How much? I can't say...
But on a stock motor, it would have about the same effect as installing a new K&N in an open lid. About 3hp, if that.
I replaced my K&N with cut lid with this intake, which I recently bought on Ebay for 107.00. It was "used" but was literally new condition. It of course makes no difference over the K&N and cut lid, heck it may even pick up more engine compartment warmth, but it definitely looks great which is why I wanted it. It has a great glossy finish and the triple filters do look tough. Combine it with the smooth intake duct work and it is a big improvement all around at least concerning appearance.

Thats exactly what I was thinking of doing, do you have any pics of it installed? And maybe somewhere to buy the smooth intake duct?
Even if its proven not to make a damn bit of HP, the smooth duct I want just for the neatness, and easy to clean factor.
I installed one for a freind a few years back on his 95 and he claimed a seat-o da- pants differance at least. I remember that there was something the i had to grind slightly with a cut-off wheel on the dremil, but can't recall what??? I does look cool though and i am sure it is close to equal with a cut lid and K&N as well... just more costly.
I had this thing on my 95 LT-1 and it was great. Three yrs later I had a 96 LT4 and ordered another unit from SLP and was dissatisfied with its quality relative to the 1st one I bought from them - there were metal burrs I could break off with a fingernail as well as chip flecks etc. on the inside of the 3 tubes and plenum. Not wanting any of this crap sucked into the motor I sent it back I opted for the cut air lid. It works great too.

BUT... was that compared to a stock blocked up lid, or one that was already cut?
Cutting the lid open gives the same performance as those aftermarket ones basically for free, so someone that is looking for a cheap mod should feel (if any) the same seat of the pants difference just by doing this.
Here are my test results for the SLP "claw", cut lid + KN, and stock. I kept the SLP and had it powdered to match my engine, overall I'm pretty happy with it even though it didn't make a big HP difference.
I had an SLP claw on my first '94. I'm not going to waste that money again with my current '94.
It's a very well made piece, and it fits nice. Installation is as simple as can be. It just doesn't make a difference. You will be MUCH MUCH better off finding an true "cold air" kit that actually draws air from outside of the engine bay.
The SLP claw is very heavy also. Not good on a race car.
It seems like chevy did a pretty good job on C4 and C5 airboxes for that matter. Its hard to beat a modified stock air-box with a K&N.
That statement does not apply to other models. Hell a intake on my I6 Trailblazer picked it up 15rwhp on the dyno.. Thats a big deal when you are only making 210 to start with
or best yet, leave it all alone with an uncut lid and paper filter.
this is not a real mod, its a feel good mod that nets mostly negatives.
real mods take real money, sweat, and pain to one degree or another.
I completely disagree, but to each his own.
There are free mods out there, some work, some don't.
This one does. It has also been proven with track slips and dyno numbers on this forum as well.
GIJoe, if you're referring to 1-2 hp at WOT on an otherwise stock motor (most here are like that) then i'll have to concede. you won't feel it, never know it, and therefore can't appreciate it.
I like the SLP. http://www.madvet.com/shop?frame=3.733 I think summitracing.com has it too. It's only $9.00 more. I don't think you'll gain more than 5HP on a stock motor. 15 HP if your motor is starving for air.
