Default T.V. cable adjustment

I'm not sure whether I should have posted this in General or Tech, so mods you can move it if you'd like.

Onto the question:

I suspect my T.V. cable may be out of adjustment for a few different reasons. I've read through my FSM, but I think adjustment of this is beyond my skills, so I'd like to take it to someone.

Do I need a transmission shop to adjust it properly? A Dealership? Or could my general mechanic be trusted? I'm not sure how c4 specific this system is, or if its a generic transmission cable that any descent mechanic can handle?

Thanks!

This is one of the eaiser adjustments you can do.
Directly from the Haynes book:
1 Engine off.
2 Depress the re-adjust tab and move the slider back through the fitting away from the throttle linkage until the slider stops against the fitting.
3 Release the tab.
4 Manually turn the throttle leaver to wide open throttle position which will adjust the cable.

Your FSM will help identify the parts. If you have a problem shoot me a PM ant I will do some copying for you.
BTW, this whole operation is almost foolproof and takes about 30 seconds, max.

Adjustment is with your ability. Open the hood and locate the tv cable on the throttle body. It is the lowest cable on the bracket. With engine off, push and hold in the d shaped button on the head of the cable. While holding it in, pull the cable cover toward the firewall till it bottoms. Then, grab the linkage at the throttle bopdy and spin it to wide open throttle. The cable will click, click, click into adjustment. That is all there is to it.

Hmmm... Maybe I will try and do this then. I like to take care of anything that I can do myself, I'm just hesitant to touch anything involving the tranny.

My reason for suspecting something amiss with the TV cable is because I can't move the shifter into 1st. Then reading through the symptoms in my Helms seems to indicate some other minor annoyances I'm having could be do to a misadjusted TV cable.

You may have a shifter cable to trans cable/linkage problem, not the TV cable. If the linkage under the car from the shifter to the trans is bent, bad or something else,it can cause the problems of not going back into Park.

Or you may have to takje the shifter plate,**** and boot off and look inside the console and see if theres something in the way keeping the shifter from going into P.

Good suggestion if the above doesn't work.

My transmission shifter would not go into first either. The bracket attaching the cable to the transmission was bent. I bent it back and it works fine.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the TV cable.

Rather than manually move the TB lever, or linkage under the hood, I prefer to firmly, floor the gas pedal, from inside the car. If because of carpet under the gas pedal, a stretched throttle cable, or that rotating the TB lever manually opens the throttle past full open, resetting the cable with the gas pedal minimizes the the distance the cable is moved back and maximizes the pressure inside of the trans, within it's limits. You don't want that adjustment any looser than necessary.

I agree with CFI-EFI this is the better way to do it.

I agree 100% with CFI-EFI method. Also in my '88 I have problems shifting into first, but that is because the shifter boot gets in the way. I pull the excess boot mateial up and no problem.
