Default Engine Heating Valve Question?

I just got done reading a good write-up on the true function of the thermostat and was left wondering a real question. The 2 points were getting the corect range and NOT drilling out the thermostat.
I have a big question on the drilling them out though.
For years now i have always drilled a small hole through the edge of every new therm. i installed. This hole is what ever small bit is available and never bigger than a standard pencil lead/tip. I had learned to do this to allow any air trapped in the system to escape past the therm.. If there is enough air trapped behind the therm. won't it prevent the therm. from opening since it can't get hot enough to unless completly submerged in coolant? Is this practice detrimental to the propper heating of the engine even though very little coolant can flow through the very small hole? Or is this practice the true saver of serious over-heating due to the trapped air preventing the opening of the therm?
Thank-you all.
And the thread i am refering to is in the C4 tech opening Stcky: C4 technical summery and FAQ, the thread posted by Central Coaster named " I'm Renaming the thermostat" there in.

Drilling the hole helps with air, also it helps to not thermal shock the head with a large difference in water temp.

If holes drilled in the thermostat were the "true saver of serious over-heating", the factory would have started copying Corvette Forum members a long time ago, and stated drilling them for new cars. A small hole or two won't do any harm, but it definitely isn't necessary.
