I have an 86 and have been noticing it is getting harder and harder to press the button down on the auto transmission shifter when shifting from Park to Drive.
Is this just something that needs to be lubricated? if so, where to lubricate? Is it something else?
pop your button off and make sure your snap ring isnt loose. had same problem on 88,and finally got stuck in park. snap ring had come loose, and button wasnt depressing enough to shift

I dont want to break the button. Does it just pop off with a flat head screw driver?
If the snap ring is loose, what is the fix. Is the ring adjustable or order a new one from parts store?
Two small, thin-blade flat screwdrivers - one on each side of the button. Pry up one side a little, and then the other. Go slow as to not break anything.
Once the button is off, look down where the button was to see the snap ring. Push DOWN on the shift ****, and you can (on a good day) re-seat the snap ring with a screwdriver tip. Or maybe use snap-ring pliers to really do it right.
Once the snap-ring is securely seated, then just push the button back down into the shift **** to seat it. Done.
