Default 1996 CE Instrument Lights

I have a 1996 CE coupe. I noticed the other day that the instument gauge lights don't come on in the dark when the car is started without the lights or parking lights being on. I don't remember if this is normal or not. Can somebody shed some light on this for me? I know they come on without the lights on in a C5 but am not sure in this late model C4. It has the "grape" sensor in the middle of the dash up close to the windshield.

Mine don't either, i believe that sensor is for dimming the LCD and determining if the interior convienience lights come on when you open the door.

That grape thing in the middle of the top of the dash has nothing to do with the dash lights it is for the A/C control and adjusts for heavy sunlight.
The sensor you are looking for is in the DIC on the front of the dash and is about the size of a pencil erasor. Try cleaning the lens on it with a Qtip and some polish to see if that helps.
