I've had a Meziere HD pump on since April and have had two close calls with engine temp. The first time I had started up and got on the highway and noticed a high temp after about 5 min. Analog was pegged and digital read 170. I stopped, shut off motor, turned on the key, and the WP wasn't running. When I shook the wiring harness, it started running. Digital then read 270!! Everything seemed fine after it cooled down, no detrimental effects. I also could never reproduce the problem, hence find anything to fix.
Car ran fine for 6 months or so and then last night it did it again. After the above incident, I watch the guage when it first warms up. Analog shot up unusually fast, digital did not, and there was no hot air. This time I found the relay to be hot to the touch. I swapped in my spare and everything seems OK.
I'm thinking about installing a warning system of some sort. Has anyone ever seen anything like that done? I was thinking that a double throw relay could be used that would switch off of the 12V to the pump and would drive a buzzer if the key was on and the pump did not have 12V (I checked, there is 12V on the pump when running). An even better check might be a current sensing relay that could warn you if current was not flowing through the pump.
I wanted to add that I use a replacement fan relay that I got from Ecklers. They have changed the design since I got mine, but it comes with the seal tite connections and the fan pulls about twice the amps that the pump does, so it should be heavy enough. Here is a link. http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...dept%5Fid=1126
Also keep an eye on your inline fuse. Al "Topload" and myself had inline fuse meltdowns. I will say these cars heat up really fast when the water pump shuts down.
I replaced my inline fuse with a 'chicklet' style waterproof fuse holder when I found the inline fuse was corroded.
That's the type that failed on my car. It also used a 20a automotive fuse. The holder and the fuse were melted. I replaced the wire and fuse holder, and the car has ran fine ever since? Same thing with Al's car.
