should i have engine braking while on the freeway in overdrive. when going downhill at 60mph i let off the throttle completely and the RPM's remain high, and i can feel the car slow down. should this happen or did my tranny shop screw up?
My '89 A4 exhibits throttle-off engine braking, provided that:
The speed is high enough that the torque converter has locked up.
I have not applied the brakes, only let off the throttle.
Applying the brakes, even just enough to activate the switch, should
cause the ECM to disengage the TCC.
Right! It stays locked up kind of like a manual until you touch the brakes. When I changed to the Lt4 Hot Cam a lot of that braking goes away because of the increased cam overlap. I thought something was wrong with the trans at first, but then I figured it out and was happy with it.
