Default Engine Removal ?

Can't seem to shake the motor loose out of the 84. The long motor mount bolts are out. Should I take the mounts off the block to make it easier so it can slide forward and up? THANKS FOR THE HELP Pipe

Default Should come right out....

I just put some up pressure on the motor with the cherry picker, and the motor came loose from the car.(with motor mounts still on the engine).

Man, I've just been through this (see the avatar). Mine was a manual, and I took the bellhousing and everything off. I assume you have all the wires out of the way? I originally missed a ground wire at the back of the driver's side head that was holding me up. I would suspect that your motor is trying to tilt backward or forward and is binding in the mounts. I put the back of the oil pan on a piece of wood on a jackstand so the engine was level, and then I kept changing the position of the cherry picker until the motor came up level. Then it slid right out.

Make sure the distributor is out.
Pull up on the engine with the cherry picker and rock it side to side passenger and drivers.
Those mounts will support the engine even with the trans Out of the car ,it's a real tight fit.
Sometimes I use a crow bar and pry up on one side.

I unbolted the motor mounts from the block so i could pull straight forward and then up and out.

I've never had to take the mounts off the engine, do you have the trans completely separated from the engine? If yours is an automatic and you have the torque converter unbolted then it should come right up and out.

It's been about 5 years since we had the engine out of my 86. Look for the grounds holding you back, as suggested above. We lifted the engine out with the tranny still mounted. I suppose the tranny is off on yours??

You want to take the wiper motor off. That will give you several more inches to pop the engine out and it cheaper than bying a replacement. If its an auto some times it is a little tough to get the two alignment pins work out. Might have to use a small pry bar from under the car and work by to pins on both side.

i've done it with and without taking the mounts off, imho it is easier to take the mounts off....i've pulled hundreds of engines (really) and c-4's and gen3 f-bodies are the only ones that the mounts come off the motor before yank.

the FSM sez to remove the mount thru bolts and unbolt the mounts from the block...does not say to remove the mounts from the car.

i recommend that you remove the wiper motor, even tho i don't.

most times you just position the cherry picker to SLIGHTLY angle the lift chain to the front of the car, grab the lift chain and shake it with some attitude, and the engine will jump off the trans...if not, make SURE that all the bolts are out..i have seen bellhousings broken by one ''missed'' bolt
