What are the 2 ***** at the top of the air filter housing duct connected to underneath it? And how do I remove these *****? They look like they are made to be turned or popped off by hand but mine are on there real tight. Are there any other tricks to removing the housing? I've got a new one I am putting in (along with my new filter and open lid).
I have tried but failed to remove these on my '87 as well (by the way, I love the 35th anniversary
model, nice car!!). I actually attempted to use vice grips. The **** turned around and around, but
would not come out. Someone said there is a spinning nut or clasp on the other side. The clasp
thing just keeps spinning. I was told to apply pressure to the air housing unit (lift up with a pry bar)
while turning the **** and this should allow the **** to turn out of the clasp. This failed. So far,
I've just managed to mangle the edges of the **** with the vice grips. Anyone else????
There is a clip attached to the bottom of the bolt that slides into the radiator shroud that is supposed to hold the based of the bolt. When the little tangs on the clip no longer hold the bolt the bolt & nut just spin.
Take a set of channel locks to the nut, use a towl to protect the plastic nut. If you can get one nut off and the other just spins you can move the entire assembly inward enough to move the bolt head across it's slot to the opening through which the bolt head can be removed.
This is helpful stuff - thanks. One more question.... once those two ***** are properly removed is there anything else that needs removal? Or does the whole unit just lift out then? Thanks again.
You can rivet the part that was free spinning to the radiator shroud to prevent this from happening in the future. There might be a tech tip on this, I'm not sure.
