typicaly its the lock cylinder not properly reading the resister on the key. measure the resistance on the key and unplug the 2 wire yellow wire connector at the bottom onf the steering colum and see if u read the same resistance there. if not then the ignition switch is bad and needs to be replace. if you can read it then the vats module may be bad.

Very easy to disable. Go to a locksmith, they will test your key and be able to sell you a module to disable VATS. Remove the underdash panel on the driver side. You will easily spot a two-wire grouping, I believe yellow and white, just to the right of the steering column. You will notice that it disconnects in the middle. Disconnect it, insert the module you got from the locksmith (into the wire going towards the firewall). Voila, VATS is now disabled. The module will cost you $25 - and your car will never not start because of VATS. It'll actually take longer to remove the underdash panel than it will to locate the wire and insert the module.

GIJOE, you might want to save this and put on your vats site.

wow excellent! Thank you!

I had some of those flowcharts and schematics from alldatapro, but I couldn't find an clean looking "how to" of replacing the lock! That's good stuff! Thanks again. I am going to try and clean some of that up for an easier to view document for everyone

Thanks again!

One weekend soon, I am going to attempt the lock removal on my own so I can take plenty of pics of all steps as well for for everyone to see better. Those docs will really help out in that project
