Default '89 700R4 Transmission Problems/Noise

A couple days after driving my 89 around 450 miles, the car started to make some strange noises. There was a whining/clicking sound coming from under the car. I revved the engine in neutral, and didn't hear anything. The only time I notice it is when accelerating.

From around 0-10 mph, there are a couple of loudish clicks. After that, there is a squeel/whine coming from the car. The more gas I give it, the louder the noise is. The noise is bad from about 15-35 mph, but is fine after that.

I've had the car for about 25k miles, and haven't changed the transmission fluid, so I will be doing that. But is there anything else that should be checked out? Hopefully this doesn't get too expensive right now...

TIA.

The noises you describe are not typical for an a4. The only bearings in the trans are torrington style, and almost never wear out. The planetary gears do occasionally break, but they will let you know they are hurt immediately. Noise would not go away if the gears are hurt. Pumps have been known to make a whirling, whining and slight buzzing noise. I suspect that your problem is behind the transmission.

Alright, thanks. I'll take it in soon and see what is going on.

Jack up the car and listen to where it's coming from, grab a friend. I've heard noises coming from dented inspection covers. The cover that covers the torque convertor rubs against the cover sometimes causing a scraping sound. I'm not suggesting that's the problem, just try to pinpoint the noise.

Does the noise occur in reverse, 1st & 3rd gear only?

It is pretty much in all of the gears now. Rev, 1st, 2nd, 3rd. If I'm at a constant speed, it isn't noticable.

Hey, Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but I am having the exact same issue/symptoms/sounds coming from my 700R4. Were you able to determine what the problem/sound was?

Thanks,

Mike

If I remember correctly, it was actually the U-Joints. A local shop fixed it for around $230. Been a couple years though, so I could be off...
