Default 383 has its own MIND....????

Ok... So I got the car to fire today.... Thats about the extent of it.... My problem is after the motor fires its literally REVVING itself...or so it seems....

First problem... My tach is incorrect I believe not really sure anymore. I bypassed the tach filter during the rebuild and havnt had the luxury of testing it yet. But it was reading that on one start the motor revved all the way to nearly 5k before dieing after about 5 sec... A few starts it held a rev at nearly 3.5k on that faulty tach.

Now I do have an aftermarket tach installed that didnt come to life when the motor started up... In fact I dont know what DID come to life.... We had the serpentine belt disconnected because the AC compressors removed.... BECAUSE....

The valve covers are off... We had to back off the rockers a full turn to get it to fire, and they may still be to tight... We had set it according to the manual... only a 3/4 turn unstead of 1/2 a turn. Thats without oiled lifters and 1.6 ratio... I dont know if this could cause what could nearly be explained as a hunting motor....

So long of short, somethings causing the motor to hunt across a very wide rpm range sort of except its more just revving up than anything... Whats step one here? If lash is causing the problem Ill fix that before hooking up the serpentine and AC compressor (needs to be off inorder to remove valve cover) Or if I hook up the serpentine will the motor calm itself back down... Is this IAC or what??

I appreciate any help in advance.... Thanx alot the car did start were making huge progress
Thanx and God bless :flag

Put the belt on it. You may also need to readjust the IAC stepper motor. Also cehck to make sure the throttle body is all the way closed and the throttle cable is properly adjusted.

If your still working on those valves, just make sure when it starts you hear them ticking.

If they are too tight, they will bend your pushrods. no nead to over tighten them, it will run easier with them loose. Then you can go and adjust them all.

A reving that high usually means you have some kind of vacuum leak, go over ALL your tracks to eliminate it. could be as simple as the IAC, all the way to being a loose runner, or an internal intake gasket to head leak.

in the future, make sure you have everything hooked up when you start it, like the ESC and the belt, etc...
Did you work out the timing yet?

i'd second the opinion on vacuum leak.. make sure all the hoses are hooked up.. with the valve covers off, i'd guess you might have left a few other things off until you put it all back together..

is the vacuum hose to the brake booster to the intake connected? if not, hook it up!!! ya need vacuum system sealed to get good idle.
