Default tire choice 84 Z51

The tires are just about gone on my 84 and I will need new rubber all around this spring. I have two questions is my 84 Z51 suppose to have the same size tires all around since the rear rims are wider? And what brands are affordable with decent grip?

All 1984s came with 4, P255/50VR-16 tires, whether they were Z51 cars or not.

RACE ON!!!

My favorite tire was the BFG zr rated radial. It, and many others have been dropped though. 2 years ago, I bought a set of Kuhmo's and have heard a rumor that they too were dropped. Pickins were slim them, they must be even worse now.

I have Fuzion ZRI's on my '84 Z51. They handle very well. Not too expensive either.

Go to the Tire Rack web site and you can doa search on 255/50-16 tire size and it will bring up what they have available. They have 4 brands in that size. You can do a comparison to see how they stack up against each other. Look at the Yokohama AVID V4S and the BFG g-Force Sport

The Kumho Supra 712 used to be available in that size and were very popular among the members here. Dunlop was also a popular tire.

Try checking at a Discount Tire store near you. They will usually offer to beat the Tire Rack price and when you buy at Discount, their final price includes mounting, balancing, old tire disposal, and any taxes. Once you buy at Discount, they will typically provide free tire rotation, flat reapair and they are also good with warranties.

While Tire Rack has excellent prices, you have to add shipping and mounting/balancing. Then you have to get your new tires to wherever you will have them installed.

I've used Falken's ever since owning my 88. When I bought the car I had no idea how many miles were on the tires yet they lasted almost 50K and were sellable on e-bay for track tires. That kind of tread life combined with the price is why my next set will also be Falkens. I've also done a few runs on the Tail of the Dragon in N.C and the tires offered amazing traction.

just my .02
