Just replaced mine on the drivers side and got it from Ecklers at the show. I needed to do it because it rocked and was not a solid seat due to the gears. My passenger side needs it to but I’m not going for it any time soon unless I get a steal of a deal.
What really gets me into a twist is that the gear assembly can’t be that hard to repair with the kind of work that most of us do. Can’t be any harder that replacing the bushings in the headlight motors.
The unit is an sealed riveted assembly. The rivets can be easily drilled out and nuts and bolts be installed. The problem is where to find the gears. It seems to be a well kept secret for a routine repair. I’m sure the gears are about $20 verses the $200 for a rebuilt.
We could get a small group of folks together who would be willing to chip in $20 or so. The guy who takes his appart and can NOT find a solution would then be guaranteed to not be out a seat track and $200. Just a thought.
Several months ago someone claiming to be from Mid America asked for feedback on what parts we wanted added to their catalog. Many responses requested power seat gears.
Nothing heard back since from that guy. His boss must have crapped on him because they make a killing off of the rebuilt tracks.
I was just out at Ecklers last week returning my original seat track core. I spoke to the power seat tech about getting the gears or where I could get them. From what I understand, the company that does the re-build also fabricates the gears. Sounds like a real custom operation that has a corner on the marker. Doesn’t sound like they will be selling the gears on the open market ant time soon.
I also got the drift that Ecklers does not make a killing on the sale of the seat tracks. I sure after the initial gear design and tooling are finished, the up front fabrication costs are paid for in time. Sounds like the effort is going have to come from some place else. I have been thinking of taking the passenger seat apart to get an idea of what has to be done.
