i have a hypertech stage 1 chip, and a cold air intake that is not installed in my car yet...would it be a good idea to put these 2 things into my car...and how much hp and torque would it give my car? i also need a new exhaust and a water pump sometime in the next year...if these are all put on and fixed...can i at least keep up with an lt1..there are a lot of kids in my town with lt1..and i was just wondering if i could keep up with them if these things are in/fixed..let me know..thanks...

The hypertec and cold air kit won't do much for you. The car may feel a bit faster, but that's usually in your head as opposed to a significant gain.

When you say 'new exhaust' do you mean from the catalytic converter's back, or from the engine back? Adding aftermarket headers and a quality cat-back system can yield considerable gains on the L98 cars, some times as much as 25 RWHP.

As far as running with LT1 cars, what does your car run now? Typically, a stock L98 will give up 1/2 a second or so the LT1, but there are exceptions. The Hypertech and the cold air will not be enough to put you on par with a stock LT1, but you may be able to outrun a substandard LT1 car, or an LT1 car with a poor driver.

Honestly, if you want to lay a hurtin' on some kid with an LT1, you'll need some real engine mods. Headers, cat-back, 1.6 roller rockers, and a tune from www.pcmforless.com should get you really close. You might also consider nitrous. I recommend N20 to just about everybody, but that's only because I'm broke as Hell and can't afford much else. Most people dismiss N20 without really knowing about it, or because of the rumors of it destroying engines. Do some of your own research before you automatically say "no" to the bottle. Nothing will put such a big grin on your face for less money.

You also might want to include the year of your car in your posts, or fill out a signature and attach it. Clicking on your profile to find out that you have a stock 90 is an extra step a lot of the old timers here are sick of doing. After all, if you are looking for help, why not make it as easy as possible for someone to help you?

Have a good one, and let us know what you decide to do!

No. You will not keep up with LT1 cars past 2nd gear (which you should do now) with those mods, they basically do very little.

yeah..bout that nos and not having money...im 16...i have NO money...we bout the 1990 vette for 7 ....new head gasket for 1200 when mine blew out...including the labor...so those mods wont do too much at all to the car...i thought it would do at least a little something...but how much would it cost for me to replace the headers and the WHOLE exhaust system..to make it better sounding and faster...

It is a nice kit. Not a waste of money, but will not yeild big power increase. unless the car has a terrible tune up now.
The adjustable fuel regulator in the kit will allow you to help fine tune the fuel for a small increase in power and drivability.

I disagree. I think the kit is a waste of money, especially if you don't need everything in the kit. If you need an air filter element, than buy one. The same with the plug wires. It is pretty well acknowledged that the air foil does little to nothing. A 160° thermostat will do nothing for power, especially after the engine has warmed up to normal operating temp. All it will do is prolong warm ups and help your engine to wear out more quickly. The adjustable fuel pressure regulator CAN help increase power if you have a the means to re tune the engine to take advantage of adjusting your fuel pressure. To do it right, you need an A/F ratio meter (wide band O2 meter) and a dyno. You need to learn a little more about engines and quit dreaming about a cheap cure-all of "horsepower in a box". Horsepower and performance take knowledge and effort. If you have enough money, you can buy your power. Otherwise, you have to arm yourself with the knowledge to be able to judge what possibly can and what can't work. Kits like that, largely appeal to the naive and lazy. Do your homework, and you will be justly rewarded.

RACE ON!!!

PS. I tried a HyperTech chip and sent it back after 1/4 mile tests proved it actually slowed me down, slightly.

Putting in thinner head gaskets would have gotten you some power. Mods on the cheap? Remove the cats and mufflers. Port your intake and exhaust manifolds.

The kit is a waste of money. The thermostat delays heat soak of the intake to help power numbers, but once the engine gets hot its no longer helping. Generic chips are always worthless, and the ignition components offer no help for a car thats already been tuned up.
