1989 C4 is making a short clunking sound in the front end under braking, but only going forward - when braking in reverse there is no noise. Couldn't find anything loose in the suspension or brakes.
Sure you have done this but...since the pads are new, make sure the tention spring clips are installed on the pads. The caliper will clunk if springs are left off.

great tip guys - I will double check the calipers, again, to see - I seem to remember them being on the pads (getting them in the proper spot seemed to be a challenge as I recall)...

Mine is also making a clunking noise when im coming to a stop (around 5-10 mph), but it seems to be coming from the rear end. Could it be the same case with the spring clips in the rear calipers?

I have the caliper off again. The spring clips seating the pads to the caliper are definitely in and seated- where would the other tension springs be? The pin securing the floating caplier is in and the caliper floats in the bracket. It seems identical to the Mustang Cobra system I have pad swapped many, many times. Am I missing something?
I am working (not very hard) on a front passenger side clunk of my own. It is intermittant and usually happens at low speeds under braking. Sometimes however, I hear it without braking, so I believe it is in the A-arm or sway bar bushings, or maybe something at the end of the front spring.
My '85 has new poly bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, rack assembly, and shocks.
The only way I have found to pinpoint this kind of noise is to have someone drive very slowy in circles on my front lawn with the hood up, while I walk along trying to hear the source as the car flexs over uneven spots in the yard.
The neighbors probably think I'm nuts, but I did find a squeaky sway bar bushing this way so I don't care.
Ordered a new set of pins and the tension clips from NAPA - should be in by Tuesday. None of the other "auto stores" can supply new pin tension clips. Hope this fixes the problem!
