Default heater core

Did I read my manual right when it tells me to remove the entire instrument base to replace the heater core? Basically thats the entire dash right? Thats alot of work? Does someone have a short cut or am i just screwed. I drive an 86 coupe. Just curious what would a shop charge to change one out?

My FSM only says to remove the dash pad. It isn't in the FSM, but some have had success removing the right seat and working, solely from below. If I had to do it again, I would work from above (as I did) as much as I could, but I might remove the seat for better access. It must be that time of the year again.

I removed the passenger seat and accomplished the swap from under the dash.

It really wasn't that bad, just time consuming.

Search for the "Fast Guy" method. As stated, it's done from under the pass dash with the seat removed. I was going to go this route, but since my dash has gained a few noises over the years, i have decided to take the long way and tighten everything i can see while i'm in there.

And don't discount the Jeb Burnett method.
