I was at the K&N website looking for alternative air filters (for my 94 LT1). They have the replacement filter for the stock air box, but no Intake Performance Kits for my year/model. Is the stock air intake efficient enough that an IPK wasn't worth making? And, does the K&N replacement filter actually make a discernible power difference?
I have seen dyno results showing no gains. I use the K&N because it saves a bunch of money to clean it rather then buy new and throw away when dirty. They last forever.
The stock air setup is fine. There may be a small gain from a cold air intake, like the front license plate scoop.
Discernible, as in you can FEEL it? No. Maybe on the dyno, and maybe at very high engine rpms. Mostly it's for freer breathing and for reuseability. The freer breathing part by itself is ok; with other modifications it could be more helpful.
As to the IPK systems, either the car's too old and they used to have one but don't any longer, or as you said, the original was pretty good. There'll be some more comments on this one, I'm sure.
K&N is nice once it gets dirty, it far outperforms a paper dirty filter. plus you can clean it and reuse it for a million miles it says. I've had mine for 6 years now.
don't bother with any of the CAI/Ramir crap unless its that front license plate one (which I think is kinda cool). Most will only be a high speed/rpm advantage.
You can get the same gains by just cutting your air lid for free.
