Default What size Torx ??

Greetings. On a L98 (car is a 1988), what size torx bit is needed for the intake manifold bolt. The largest I have is a T40 and it is too small. The "handy" Haynes manual mentions a "special torx" tool but fails to mention the torx size.

If I know the size I can buy the right one w/o buying a whole "1 million piece" tool set for just that one piece.

Thank you for your help.

Save that Haynes for a wheel chock and order a FSM. Then head for the auto parts store or Sears and pick up a set of Torx bits. If you are going to be doing much more than just changing your oil, you're going to need both.

RACE ON!!!

In the smaller torx bits I prefer Snapon but hate the price. I found the tolerences on the Craftsman were not the same as Snapon. When I am working on my Harleys sometimes Craftsman just does not cut it. I have to admit however not had the same problem on my Corvette.

I hear you on the FSM. No arguments there. It is on my list as soon as I get all the maintenance done (almost there). At this point, I just need to tighten up one bolt on the intake manifold.

Yep! Craftsman's quality has gone down. I just bought a Craftsman 8" bench grinder. I got looking, and it was made in China. I grew up with Craftsmen and it was one of if not the best. That damn grinder vibrates so bad it scares me to operate. As near as I can tell, the wheels are not out of round, but they vary in thickness. What a piece of junk. Should of got one from Harbor Freight. Probably the same thing, but $70.00 cheaper...

It's no secret that Craftsmans power tools are made in China. Hell, even Milwaukee has been bought by the same Chinese firm (TTI) that make the Ryobi power tools. BTW... in many cases, the Craftsman power tools are now made for them by Ryobi.

Hand tools are a different story. Most are made by Danaher here in the USA, except the mini pliers (which have been "hecho in China" for some time now).

If you want some nice cost effective USA made torx bits, look for OTC bullet proof torx.

Hey that looks like a decent set. Goes up to T-60. Makes me wonder if the dreaded T-55 is part of the set?

The only special torx bolt I can think of is the small TAMPER PROOF one that removes the Fuel Pressure Regulator Cover. It has that little Pin in the middle of it so you can't remove it with a regular Torx bit. Pipe

Pipe: I took a little punch and just "knocked hell" out of the little pins in the middle of the Torx holes. A regular Torx will then work great.

A question to eschoendorff: Do you have a set of these Torx tools? Are they good quality? Thanks in advance for your comments.

If your '88 is the same as my '86, you're gonna love the one on the bottom of your AC Compressor...

i don't know if its the same one as my 85, but as i remember, one of the ac compressor bolts is a hex with a torx recess in the center. had a hell of a time getting this thing out - the FSM was absolutely no help. as i recall, i had to take a thin wall 15mm 1/4" drive socket. when i got the bolt out, then i saw it was designed for torx removal. WTF - thanks GM

13 replies and no answers? A T45 is used on the intake base, the T40 on the runners. You may also want a T55 for other parts of the car.

My FSM doesn't list the bolt sizes in the parts drawing or R&R instructions. I find that poor. The paper of the Helms manuals is poor as well. I had FSM for a previous car and it was much better.

Aardwolf, thank you much. I was wondering when someone would actually tell me the size.

I did infer that it was a T45 (at the base of the intake) since the T40 is too small and I did find a T50 in my old toolbox and that one was too big. So, I figured it must be a T45. Thanks for the confirmation.

I think so... I'll have to go check mine. I have heard that people have good luck using the Allen brand T55s on impact guns too...

Yes, I have that set and I personally would consider them good quality USA made tools.
