Default Dana36 Batwing interchange

I'm getting a dana36 center section from a member, and for shipping reasons i asked him not to send the batwing.

I just want to make sure, I noticed the batwing has carrier cap supports cast into it. These batwings - are they machined for a specific mated center section? I was intending on leaving my batwing bolted up in the car and just changing the center. I should probably get this question answered before the seller ships the center.

Have him ship it. All stock dana 36 batwings interchange. There are at least 2 different batwings for a 36 that I am aware of, but they interchange perfectly.

Hey Pete,

I should be able to leave the batwing, spring, etc in place and just unbolt the center and pull it through the front right? I imagine the axles have enough give to allow the ujoints to be unbolted to pull the diff forward ?

Joe, I am terribly sorry. My post was all bad. I did not read completely. The backs with the supports welded in must have the carrier main caps machined to fit the cover. I should never post after first waking up. My apologies.

If his batwing has the caps welded in, you should be able to use the center section with your batwing without issue. Again, my apologies for not reading it through.

I have no idea. Maybe I should just have him send the batwing too then and swap both to be safe.

I know on f-cars,when using a rear end girdle the caps supports are adjustable to put xx preload on the main caps. On the Dana36 it appears from pictures anyway, that tolerance is machined and non adjustable. Thats why i wanted to make sure I can interchange covers.

I'm still confused

Joe,
guys were welding standoffs in the dana 36 covers in an attempt to prevent the main caps in the case from deflecting. If the cover he has contains those standoffs, and the main caps were properly milled to the cover standoffs, I would get the cover from him if it is cheap. Cannot hurt to have. If the shipping is the only price difference, I would pay it if it were me.

Oh So they don't all have the standoffs. I'll ask him.

Thanks for the info! I'm new to a lot of the vette stuff.
