Over time many K&N tests have been posted here that prove the K&N is not the best performer for our application. Some members have run back to back 1/4 mile tests using the K&N and other filters with results that do not indicate the K&N provides the best performance.
Also, I have been the victim of a MAF failure after installing a new, pre-lubed K&N. So there is much to learn here.
If you don't believe me I'll sell you a used K&N to prove this to yourself.
WOW! With all the debates and products in our quest for performance gains Ive never seen such a heated debate over gauze. Im not going to add anymore fuel to this fire because I too use K&N in all my vehicles, not because its K&N but we have 5 different vehicles and K&N makes filters for just about anything where as other performance filters havent covered yet.I also believe that using oiled gauze does allow more air into my combustion chamber than paper filters. Foam filters I dont like for the simple fact that in time the foam breaks down and gets sucked into, well you get it.I personaly believe that K&N doesnt add horsepower, the gauze just allows more air to enter your engine and relys on the oil to ****** dirt and such in the air.Where as paper filters or paper like filters have tighter fibers that ****** contaminants to the micron which in turn restrict your air flow but your getting much cleaner air entering you engine. Working for a couple of dealerships as a mechanic for several years Ive seen the gammet of wierd things and neglect. Now to my long awaited point is,If you use a K&N filter and you want a long life with your engine you will have to clean it alot more often than everyother oil change.I clean and oil mine every thousand.Ive seen what 100,000 miles on K&N look like on your heads and upper cylinder walls, you get very small pitting now Im talking very, very fine. The surface is almost pourise to the touch. Even profesional racers change or clean air filters before every race its a give and take, you want more air, your not worried about the microns, you want filtration to the microns, you get restriction.I apologise for the long and somewhat boring post, but I guess the bottom line on filtration and filtration maint. is theres always good with the bad and vice versa.Oh good advice on the MAF cleaning, another power robbing neglect.
How are you suppost to clean these things? I have the open lid one. I have the oil spray but never actually cleaned it. I look at it. it looks O.K , I leave it alone. Its been two yrs now and 10,000 miles.
You need to buy filter cleaner and filter oil. You remove the filter and spray it until its saturated and let it sit. Then hose it off with water and blow it out with a leaf blower or let it dry.
Reinstall filter and then spray the outside filter with a fine and even coating of filter oil. If you spray both sides then the oil will be sucked in and mess up the MAF. Just make sure you dont over-oil and youll be fine
