Default Stock L98/Super Ram Numbers?

Anyone have any strip times/speeds or dyno numbers for a stock L98 with Super Ram (base and runners/plenum)?

Gutted CAT's, CAT Back, and 1.6 RR's ok, but stock heads, cam, and exhaust manifold?

Thanks...

Doug

I don't think that you can put these numbers up as what you would gain if you did the swap, but here is what I saw.

2005 - all the mods listed below (had the SR base intake), except high flow cat and SuperRam. Three runs only (first time at the track) best was 14.439 for the 1/4.

2006 -The high flow cat has been added, and SuperRam, plenum and runners. Three runs only, best time 14.130.

This is an 1985, automatic, 3.07 gears. Had about 190,000 miles in 2005 when I went to the track and over 209,000 in 2006.

Engine block, pistons and cam (al the bottom end) is stock. Although a year had passed between my runs at the track, the SR performance was very evident. In 2005 you could feel the performance hit the wall about 3/4's the way down the track. The car was still accelerating but not like it had up to that point. In 2006, the car kept pulling hard all the way through the 1/4 mile. I think will a little more fine turning that I could have been into the 13's.

Thanks John, did you had the AFR 190's for both of these track sessions, or the stock heads?

Do you have the trap speeds available?

AFR heads for 2005 and 2006. Only difference with 2006 was the replacement of original cat with Magnaflow high flow cat and the SR runners and plenum. The cat itself would not result in the difference of the car pulling hard thru the entire 1/4 mile.

2006 14.130 @ 98.210
2005 14.439 @ 97.509

These runs at the Sacramento Raceway started as a challenge with my oldest son who had a 65 Chevy and had been drag racing for a while on the track (and off ). He and I took the car up to the Sacramento Raceway for the annual Vette Magic Corvette only race day just to see what it would do. He ended up having to sell his car before moving up to Beaverton Oregon, so we never had a chance to race. So my total track experience over these two years has been these 6 runs, not a lot of experience.

But looking back before we ever had a chance to race, he finally hit a 14.0 with his car. It was a wild 350, full headers 2-1/2 or 3" duel pipes back to Flowmasters that the exit pipes were cut off about 4 inches from the mufflers. An exotic high lift cam, 750 double pumper Holley on a Edelbrock manifold and 4.11 gears, automatic with a high stall converter. So considering the stock cam and 3.07 gears I can't complain with a 21 year old car .

John. For comparison sake my 88 when it was "bone stock" ran a 14.21@98.5 MPH. And with exhaust and some free mods it went 13.71@101.

I would think the combo could be worth around 240-250 RWHP and be capable of low 13s in an otherwise well running car.

I think Kopbet ran a similar configuration before going to a miniram.

Due to the costs involved it may not be the best bang for the buck, but it should still be an effective combination and still be suitable for possible future mods like heads, cam , headers etc.

I was there in 2006. I ran a 14.3 @ 97MPH with my 88. It was HOT upper 90s and I had street tires. My 2.73 gears with OD slow down my 1/4 time. At 97 MPH I just get rolling. Next year I'll be at Corvette Magic again. I will have added 1.6 RRs, March undersized pullys, and wider wheels and tires. Last year I had the tires fully inflated and spun like crazy. I also had Magnaflow Catbacks installed and Super Ram. Hope to see ya there and hope it's a little cooler next year.

I made 255 rwhp, 355 ft-lbs torque on my old SuperRam + stock cam setup. Over 300 ft-lbs of torque at 2000 rpms.

In the 1/8th, I ran 8.70s @ 83.xx mph

John, do you have the 1/8 times from those runs? I have only run my '86 at an 1/8 mile track so far, so I'm just looking to compare your car as it was to mine.

Was this with the stock heads and exhaust too (just a SR)?

I'm going back and forth about doing a Blower, or Heads, Cam, and SR (I'm in CA and need to smog it so the SR is my only option aside from LTR's etc), or a combination.

My goal I believe will be 400 CHP as the stock bottom end isn't good for much more than that I'd imagine?).

So, since LT Headers are also not legal here, I'm currently thinking about just throwing a SR on the stock Long Block (minimum effort), and replacing the Pup CAT's with a couple of High Flow CAT's, gutting the main CAT, hoping that gets me to 300 CHP or a little better, and then doing a mild 6 PSI Blower with Water/Meth Injection, MSD, In-Tank Pump, bigger Injectors, and a conservative tune (expecting about 390 - 405 CHP).

Thoughts about getting a 91 Z07 up to a CARB legal 400 CHP in CA on the cheap (say $3500 using used parts)?

Thanks...

Doug

Remember guys that this car is restricted by California by not having smog legal headers. So no matter WHAT I do to the exhaust, I still am working with a hour glass at the stock exhaust manifold. Where the tubes collect, they are pinched into a triangular shape which restricts the flow. My guess is that I lose at least 1/3 of the tube diameter at this point.

I am also running a 21 year old car that now has over 212,000 miles!

2005 14.439 @ 1/4 mile 9.378 @ 1/8 mile
2006 14.130 @ 1/4 mile 9.073 @ 1/8 mile

Making only six (6) runs through the 1/4 mile in my lifetime should also be factored into the numbrs. Experience would probable help bring down these numbers. The 1/4 mile run is not my focus on life or with this car. Making the run once a year is a kick. And as noted above, this track is not one to give you a good temperature while you make your runs.

Yes, I used my stock 113 Aluminum heads, stock exhaust manifolds with no cats, and no mufflers back then. Also was running with 24 lb injectors. The stock cam did incredibly well. Off idle torque was more than enough. My base timing then was set at 10 degrees. That helped with the torque as well but if you are setting timing above that, I suggest running premium gas.

Are you a M6 or A4?

Your 255WHP should be what I can expect then, though I'm wondering if I should use 15% or 20% to convert it to CHP etc?

Thanks...

Well, aside from CARB most of it's pretty nice (great weather, year around Vette fun), but CARB is really the pits!

I called them and said look, I want to swap a 91 ZR1 exhaust, true duals, dual CAT's, same model year etc, it's a better exhaust for emissions etc, and they said I'd need to swap in the LT5 too...

I trued to explain to them that getting a LT5 really blows the budget, but to no avail...

Mine is an A4 with 3.07 stock gears. 255 whp/355 wtq = 300 chp/417 ctq. I took the standard 15% conversion.

Instead of having the infamous stock TPI "wall of choke" at a lowly 4000 rpms, the SuperRam will delay it to about 4600 rpms. Just make sure you have ample patience installing the whole intake, base, runners, big box plenum, and gaskets. Its a little harder to work on than a stock TPI intake!

Hmmm, I would've hoped that the SR would've power peaked at 5K RPM or so, and pulled reasonably to 5.5K?

What RPM were you shifting?

Thanks...

Mine does, but my cam is a little bigger than stock and my exhaust is not restricted like stock. I never had the SR on my stock bottom, but i still think the stock cam and SR would be close to your numbers.
