Help - no speedometer / Vehicle Speed Sensor - FRUSTRATED!
My Speedometer reads 0mph always... or at least until I have driven 25miles or so.. At first the speedometer just started being a tad erratic (jumping 3mph quickly back and forth) then it developed into the problem I described above.. The tranny was rebuilt about 2 months ago and we chose to replace the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) since the old one had 165k on it..
this weekend I installed a new VSS and when I pulled it off the lift and on the way home everything worked perfectly.. then I let the car sit on Sunday and today on the way to work the same thing happened again.. no reading until driving for about 20 miles then everything works fine..
This is a Real P.I.T.A. and I'm looking for some help.. I though it had to be the only mechanical part in the system since after time it works (assuming heating it up did something or it being cold was the issue) the other elements of the system are all electronic (ECM,CCM, Cruise Control Module, Radio Speed sound adjustment - which has been disconnected).
What do you guys think - Has anyone experienced this type of problem?
Have you checked all your grounds yet? I had a similar problem but I would see 5-15 MPH with the car standing still. After taking a close look I found a broke ground lug.

HELP![/QUOTE]
Yes, mine started doing the same thing only it takes about 2miles and starts working, seems that whatever drives the vss slips until it warms up enough to catch. I'll be dealing with this issue in 5 months
or so when i return the vette back into service.

I had a VSS problem with my '87 coupe. No speedo, no odometer and it would set a code (I believe it was 24). The yellow wire from the VSS was grounding out against the automatic transmission. There was a sharp edge on the transmission that sliced throught the plastic conduit and the yellow wire. It was real frustrating trying to track it down.
Which grounding lug did you have issues with.. I know there are quite a few.
The one on the trany on the drivers side. It is PITA to get to and it took me the better part of an hour to get thething fixed and that was with the car on a rack.
Checked all the grounds... good.. (even the grouping on the drivers side bellshousing and the drivers side engine block).
put the stock PROM back in.. no change.
unplugged the brown 22 pin weatherpack from the ECM and from the VSS and did a continuity check between pin's 1 and 12 and the pigtail at the VSS.. all is good..
checked my helms manual backwards and forwards.. it has a flow chart to use if the speedo, cruise and volume control doesnt work but DTC 24 is not set.. however, it requires a special GM pulse induction tool ($$$$) and the only outcomes are bad ECM, CCM, or cruise control module..
I'll be calling the dealer in the am to get the tool...
