Default Forged, Hyper or Cast

The reason most people don't go with forged pistons is typically because they don't want to spend the money. The reality is that a good forged piston is cheap insurance and more importantly it allows you to change horsepower configurations without rebuilding the bottom end. Many of us who start out with a power goal when building an engine end up wanting more power either right away or within a year of building the engine. In many cases people decide to add nitrous or a supercharger later and if they built the engine with cast or hyper pistons the bottom end pretty much needs to come apart if you plan on giving it some serious boost or cylinder pressure.

When you factor in the time and money to get the engine out of the car, buy the new pistons and rings, rehone the block, rebalance the rotating assembly, factor in the assembly cost or your calculate your time to assemble it...and you just blew more than double what it would have cost if you to put in a good forged piston the first time.
