Default Play In Steering Question?

I recently noticed a slight amount of play in the steering wheel on my base '86. It's more noticeable at highway speeds and the best way I can describe it is if I'm cruising along at 65 mph, with my right hand on the wheel at 12 o'clock, I can rotate the wheel about an inch or more either right or left and there is no steering response. It does eventually catch and steer but not as quick as it used to. What can be causing this? I do have the steering rack morning sickness with hard steering on cold mornings, but once it warms up, no problems. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Tie rod ends are original with 107,000 miles. How do you go about checking them? I know north south movement in front wheel is bearing, is east west movement tie rods? Thanks for your reply and help.

To cure the morning sickness simply use some of that Lucas steering restorer. That stuff is incredible! Worked wonders on my rack, maybe it could help yours...
