Many of you may have followed my first thread on this issue, 'MAF Help Needed'. I'd post this there but that thread gotten way off-topic. Here's the deal, just as it happened.
1. Car is running fine, as always
2. Remove MAF to give the butterflies a little shot of silicone (so it idles as it should)
3. Car is running fine, as always
4. 45 days later, repeat step #2, removed the Rear MAF Screen, notice crack in MAF element (not caused by screen removal)
5. Car runs like hell, sounds like it's missing, choking, running 'choppy'
6. Purchase slightly used Bosch MAF Sensor from a low-mileage L98 (same exact Bosch part number, but I notice sensor style appears different)
7. Car runs better, but not where it was at step #3
8. Replace MAF with original, cracked MAF, rear screen removed
9. Car runs as it did at step #1
check the connection, make sure it's clean and tight.
Just about everything service related involves removing the mass air sensor for access. You could have bad contacts in the plug, it an internal break in the wire just behind the weather pack connector that plugs in the maf. Try giving the wires the wiggle test.
I have changed a few connectors because of this. My own car was one of them.
